There are plenty of sports to talk about

For talk radio hosts, news usually happens in some sort of cycle.

There’s the 24/7 news cycle, in which news breaks depending on the time zone in which the developments are taking place. There’s the political cycle, which takes into account the four-year presidential cycle and specific elected offices and referendums in local elections.

Then there’s the sports cycle … and in Wisconsin there is very little down time.

“At the end of July we have Packers training camp, but until then it’s pretty much a mixed bag,” said veteran sportscaster Bill Michaels. “The Brewers are 1A, then we have the NBA Draft, NASCAR …”

Michaels took his Big Unit Cruiser to the pits of Road America for the NASCAR Sargento 200 last weekend in Elkhart Lake.

“This is a pretty big event for us. We will be in the pits and staying overnight,” Michaels said while explaining how he plans on being out and about for large and small events, doing summer promotions throughout the state.

For Mitch Nelles of WAUK-AM 540 ESPN in Milwaukee, there are three things on the radar this summer.

“Summerfest,” Nelles said, is top of mind. “We are broadcasting from there every weekday.”

Second on his list is the ESPN Milwaukee golfing event with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and No. 3 is getting out to see the Chinooks semi-pro baseball team play in Mequon.

“The great thing about the event is because Aaron is so honest and accessible everyone gets to talk with him. It’s not like other charity events and you just get to say hello,” Nelles said, while also mentioning that getting to a family-friendly event like the Chinooks allows him to take his little one and run around the ballpark.

Nelles appears with Steve “The Homer” True on “Homer and Thunder” weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m., where he delights in sharing his opinion on the news of the day, including the latest laments on the Brewers.

“We will have to see how the (Zach) Greinke and (Shaun) Marcum situation plays out,” Nelles said. “The team needs to have a good handle on reality and can separate emotion away from the needs of the franchise.”

For the rest of the summer and transition into fall, there will be plenty for sports radio talkers to mention as well.

“We have the U.S. Women’s Open … and then there’s the anticipation of the Packers season,” Michaels said. “We’ll be talking about the Packers and their defense.”

Michaels has been talking sports in Wisconsin for a while, and now he runs his own radio network of stations throughout the state that carries his weekday show. Locally, he can be heard on WSSP-AM 1250. He’s also broadcast on stations in Madison, Green Bay, Sheboygan, Marshfield, Wausau, Marinette and Menominee, Mich.

HEAT WAVE: If you were out and about last week during the recent heat wave, you may have been one of the fortunate ones to get some free water from Kidd and Elizabeth at WMYX-FM 99.1 The Mix.

“It’s an easy way to remind people how important it is to stay hydrated,” said morning co-host Kidd O’Shea.

This is the second time the DJs left the studio for the beaches and streets during extreme heat. You can find photos on their Facebook page. 

NEW LOOK: Starting Wednesday, subscribers to Time Warner Cable will have a new programming guide to look at. The new color scheme should allow for the program titles to be easier read on the grid, and the changes are welcome for the pause and start-over functions as well.

This latest move comes on the heels of a new joint venture with Time Warner and Verizon Wireless. Customers are now able to get cable, internet and voice packages from Time Warner Cable, and Verizon smartphones and tablets from both companies.

HI DAVE: NBA Finals MVP LeBron James will be visiting with David Letterman on the “Late Show” tonight to chat about the Miami Heat’s victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. This will be James’ fifth time on the show.
