A guide to MPS facilities changes

The MPS board met Tuesday night to vote on a number of school closings, moves and other changes. Here is a quick guide to the results, courtesy of MPS.

The following schools will close at the end of the current school year (June 2012):

  • 65th Street School
  • Burroughs Middle School
  • SUPAR
  • WORK Institute
  • Montessori High School
  • Wisconsin Career Academy

The following changes will go into effect at the end of the current school year (June 2012):

  • Wisconsin Conservatory of Lifelong Learning will move to 1017 N. 12th St.
  • Hamlin Garland School moves to 3120 W. Green Ave. The grade levels of Hamlin Garland School will change to K4-grade 6 in school year 2012-13. In 2013-14, grade 7 will be added, and in 2014-15, grade 8 is to be added.
  • MacDowell Montessori School moves to 6415 W. Mt. Vernon Ave. The grade levels of MacDowell Montessori change to K3 to grade 12.
  • Hayes Bilingual Elementary School moves to 971 W. Windlake Ave. The grade levels for Hayes will be K4 to grade 6 in 2012-13 school year. In 2013-14, grade 7 will be added, and in 2014-15, grade 8 is to be added.
  • Kosciuszko Montessori School will have K3 through grade 3 in school year 2012-13.
  • Carver Academy remains open in school year 2012-13. Enrollment next year is limited to K4 students and siblings of existing students.
  • James Madison Academic Campus changes from a charter school to a traditional MPS school.
  • Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language changes from a charter school to a traditional school.
  • Milwaukee School of Entrepreneurship changes from a charter school to a traditional school.
  • 68th Street School’s building will close in June 2012. The administration has been directed investigate merging the program with a school, and to report back to the Board in February.
  • Golda Meir: In fall 2012, grades 6-8 will be located in the Milwaukee Education Center, at 227 W. Pleasant St. Planning for a high school expansion at Meir occurs during 2012-13 school year, with grade 9 added in fall 2013.
  • Community High School’s location in the 2012-13 is yet to be determined. Its charter contract was renewed for two years.
  • Alliance and Carmen charter schools also received contract renewals.
