MPS Supt. Thornton’s statement regarding MTEA contract vote

Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Thornton issued the following statement Tuesday following a vote by teachers in the district not to modify their contract approved in 2010:

“We’re grateful for the opportunity given to us by the MTEA (Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association) leadership, the legislature and the governor.

“While a different outcome could have had a positive impact on our budget and our children, we remind our families that we never assumed those potential savings in our budget planning.

“We will continue listening to parents and community members in advance of our formal budget proposal later this month.

“As it stands now, our proposal makes significant cuts at Central Services on top of those initially proposed. The move is aimed at keeping class sizes as small as possible and ensuring that our specialty programs have the funds they need to maintain their integrity.”

Dr. Thornton proposed offering additional funds for specialty schools in his April 24 budget. I would like to know what are the criteria for allocating these funds? How are schools notified if they are receiving additional support?
I would like to ensure that the redistribution of our limited resources is done in an equitable manner.

  2. Real school reform is simply not possible when people like Supt. Thornton collect salaries which exceed those of everyone in Congress, the President’s Cabinet, and every Justice serving on the US Supreme court — and yes, that is the case. (It’s easy to verify this startling fact with Google.) The website above is for a blog devoted to changing this. You will also find a petition linked there; we’re asking Congress for legislation to deal with this nationwide problem. Details are at the petition website: http://www.change.org/petitions/the-c-a-p-education-reform-proposal-save-america-s-schools-by-cutting-administrators-pay-with-federal-legislation — Please read it, and, if you agree, please sign it, and spread the word. This is the key to REAL school reform. Everything else anyone has thought of has been tried — and nothing has worked. It’s time for a new approach.
